December Picks

Story of the day:  That Little Charlie Brown Christmas Tree

When we were stationed in Spokane, Washington, my father and mother took my brother and I on a Christmas Tree Hunting endeavour.  As we headed through the mountainous terrain and walked through hundreds upon hundreds of trees, I remember saying to myself, “That one looks good, or that one will work, so let’s just chop one down and head home.”

As we kept looking for the perfect tree, my mom and dad were quickly reminded that the tree we would have to cut down would have to be a small one, because the size car we had at the time wasn’t able to hold a 6 or 7 foot tree.  So, with that in mind, we finally came across a little 4 foot tree that looked perfect.  We chopped down the tree and strapped it to the top of our small car and headed back to the house.

Once we arrived home, the first thing my brother and I did was run to get all of the things that we needed to decorate this little tree.  First we put the lights on, and everything seemed okay.  It wasn’t until when we put our first ornament on the tree that it just about gave way.  The branch of the tree, from which the bulb hung from sulked all the way down.  After all the ornaments were placed upon this tree, the tree looked as though it were going to break from all the weight that it was bearing.

I remember being so sad that our tree didn’t look like every other decorated tree, like a perfect tree.  I remember sitting on my couch and just staring at this sad looking Christmas tree and wondering if this was really it.  Instead of rejoicing in the fact that my parents took their time to give us a great experience, I couldn’t look past that Little Charlie Brown Christmas Tree.

How many times in our life, have we let little experiences that could really be blessings in disguise, slip by because of what we thought the situation should be like or look like.  If I had an opportunity now to go back to that time frame, I would rejoice in the fact that I got to do something that I had never done before and truly appreciated the time that I had.  And although I am able to take joy now, I could have had more joy in the blessings, had I done it then.  So, I wrote this to say, no matter what the situation is, or how it looks, even if it doesn’t look the way you think that it should, enjoy the time, the moment, and the people that can all be a part of God’s Miracles that can truly be your blessing :)

Quote of the day:   C. S. Lewis

“Joy bursts in on our lives when we go about doing the good at hand and not trying to manipulate things and times to achieve joy.”

Bible verse of the day:  Isaiah 12:3

“Therefore, with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.”

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the many blessings that You have placed into my life.  Even at the time, when I didn’t know they were blessings, I am now able to take joy in knowing that those little moments came from You and I am so thankful for them.  Lord, I pray that You continue to teach me how to not take for granted the time that I have here, not lose sight of Your purpose, and enjoy every moment that is truly a blessing from You.  I pray to not let the things that don’t appear the way that I want them to appear, bring me down, but know that these little things, just like that little Charlie Brown Christmas Tree, are truly blessings in disguise.  I give You all the praise and glory for those moments.

In Jesus Name I pray,

Amen

Story of the day:  Glory in the highest

As I was reading Luke 2 this morning, the story of the Birth of Jesus, I found myself trying to look at this passage from the many different perspectives of people that witnessed this amazing event.  I can read this passage over and over and over again and every time I read it, I stand amazed as God shows me different things everytime I read it.  And although every passage in the Bible is powerful and alive, this passage always seems to shake me to the center of my core.

Today, I would like to look at a part of the passage in Luke 2:9-11, 13, from the Shepherds point of view. Picture the setting, everything is quiet, and the shepherds were just doing their jobs of overseeing the flock. It was dark, except for the one bright star, and all of a sudden “Behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them”,  they became afraid and the angel said, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.  For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”  First it says that there is only one angel that appears to the shepherd and let’s them know about Jesus.  In Luke 2:13, there is more than one angel, a multitude of angels, appearing to them and giving God all the glory.  When I picture this in my mind, I see all of these beautiful angels, appearing like a choir, singing their hearts out in harmony, and so much peace, love, and joy radiates from them and into the hearts of these shepherds.

These shepherds were just given the best Christmas card ever!!  The overflowing Spirit of God flowed through these angels and into the hearts of the shepherds, never leaving them to worship God the same. These shepherds were chosen by God to receive the wonderful news and throughout the Bible are used in many Books to represent our Heavenly Father. One particular verse is in John 10:11 where Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd.  The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.”  Jesus was born in the City of David so that His life could be given for us.  There is no greater love than that! He was born to die so that we can live. What an amazing gift!  And the good shepherd that He was, He did give His life for His sheep.

And because of His Love, we, His flock, if we receive His gift, can live.

Quote of the day:  Christy Povolish

“He was born to die so that we can live.”

Bible verse of the day:  Luke 2:20

“Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.”

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sharing this with me.  It is through me that You work and everyday You give me something to share with others.  I could never do this on my own, it is through Your power, Grace, Mercy, and Love, that I am able to do the job that You have given to me.   I always stand in awe of Your Great Love and never ending joy.  I pray that this Christmas and everyday we look to Your Word for Living Water to flow deep from our souls and into the lives of others.  God, I pray that people will be changed and that the life that they live represents You.  Thank You for this day.

In Jesus Name I pray,

Amen
