What’s in His Name?

Story of the day:  What’s in His Name?

God has many names.  Each of the names, rich in meaning, gives us a little insight into Who He is.  So, what’s in His Name?  The Old Testament, specifically, in Isaiah 9:6 tells us some of the names that Jesus is called, even before He was born.  The names that Isaiah mentioned are Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

The first name that Isaiah mentions is Wonderful.  He is wonderful in His birth, life, death, and resurrection.  None could compare to Him.  Counselor because He understands us.  Walking and living with us, He is able to understand what it means to be human.  He was tempted and tried His whole life, yet there was no problem too big for Him to handle.  And no matter how much suffering He did while He was here, He still cared and showed compassion for the weak, the poor, and lost.

Mighty God reveals to us that no matter what, ALL things are possible with Him.  This is evident when even the winds and the waves are subject with Him, and death’s sting is not able to hold Him.  Isaiah also called Him Everlasting Father because He was there before any of us were around (John 8:58) and because He offers us everlasting life (John 3:16; 5:24).

The last name that Isaiah 9:6 mentions is that He is The Prince of Peace.  He is called this for the obvious reason, Jesus brought peace to the world (John 14:27).  He also brought Peace with God (Romans 5:1) and the Peace of God into our lives (Philippians 4:6-7).

Though these five amazingly small words describe God in a big way, they are only able to touch a small aspect of Who God truly is.   And yet, with all of the things that we have learned from these five names, I find myself even more blessed because “the Creator of the Universe, as Robert E. Wells has said, Who with a Word spoke it all into being, who is present everywhere in this universe and beyond, who upholds it all with His mighty power is so Great, and His Greatness is so Worthy to be praised!’

Quote of the day:  Author Unknown

“God’s grace is immeasurable; His mercy inexhaustible; His peace inexpressible.”

Bible verse of the day:  Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come before You humbled by all that You are, all that You do, and all that You continue to do.  Your Love, Compassion, and Mercy is so indescribable to me that Isaiah was able to show me through a small description how Great You truly are.  Father, I fall to my knees and give You all the praise and glory this day, that in turn, my life can be but to serve You.  Thank You for Who You were before I was born, and for Who You are after this world.  I love You and thank You for this blessed day!

In Jesus Name I pray,

Amen
